She would have enjoyed
Treading the wet turf of her own grave.
All walking pleased her
And things organic and growing,
Textured and uncomplicated.
But the tense I use tells it all.
The past conditional
Confirms that life is transitional.
She would have means she won't
Enjoy this or anything else
Ever.
She has gone from the scene
And only her remains remain.
Probably, only he -
And me writing this -
Will think of her tonight.
Nothing now - only bone
Turning to earth under sodden sod,
The yellow flowers wilting in their turn - no sun.
